| 内容記述 | After reclaiming Wuchang, the capital of Hubei Province, from the Taiping forces in 1854, Zeng led the Xiang Army and fleet down the Yangzi River toward Nanjing, breaking through the Taiping defensive line at Tianjia Town. After reaching Jiujiang, part of his fleet became trapped in Poyang Lake. Refusing to abandon them, Zeng remained in Jiangxi Province, where he also suffered the loss of his trusted commander Taqibu to sudden illness. Without an official post or stable financial base in the province, Zeng struggled to secure resources and clashed with local officials. His appeals to the Xianfeng Emperor for a share of transit taxes(lijin)collected in Shanghai or revenue from Shanghai maritime customs were rejected. Meanwhile, Hubei once again fell into crisis. Zeng dispatched reinforcements under Hu Linyi, then provincial judge of Hubei, who emphasized the strategic importance of Wuhan. Yet Wuchang and Hanyang soon fell to the Taiping forces. Hu fought on but suffered a devastating defeat at Zhashan due to a shortage of funds. He made repeated efforts to raise resources—mobilizing lijin revenues, requesting subsidies from other governors and viceroys, profiting from salt sales, and even contributing his own grain. Luo Zenan, one of the Xiang Army’s most capable commanders, also argued that Wuhan should take precedence over Jiujiang, and Zeng agreed in the interest of the greater cause, allowing Luo to go to Hubei to assist Hu Linyi. Luo was killed in action during the assault on Wuchang. Finally, at the end of 1856, Wuchang and Hanyang were recaptured from the Taiping forces. |
