| 内容記述 | This paper aims to examine the landscape of toponyms related to the traditional apple cider industry in the Basque Country, and to assess the significance of cider culture presence for the Basque people by comparing the geographical distribution of actual cider industry sites and cider/apple-related toponyms. In the Basque Country, apple cider, known in the Basque language as “sagardoa” has a long history of production, and is a typical local beverage. Toponyms derived from the word for apple, in the Basque language “sagar,” are widespread, although they generally do not refer to fruit products but rather to apple forests or orchards as part of the landscape. They are especially popular in the northern region of the Basque Autonomous Community, mainly in the province of Gipuzkoa, corresponding to the recent geographical distribution of cider wineries. Several toponyms related to cider production facilities, such as “tolare/dolare“ for lager and “upa/upel“ for wooden barrels, are also concentrated in the province of Gipuzkoa. The sagardoa production landscape in the Basque Country, reflected in oiconyms and natural toponyms, is preserved and represented as a linguistic landscape in places of memory. The Basque people living today continue to interpret these landscapes in order to reinforce their nation by preserving the economic and cultural heritage of their ancestors. | |||||||||||||
