| 内容記述 | This study examines the rise of the Nepali diaspora in Japan, a rapidly growing community emerging amid Japan’s demographic decline and evolving immigration policies. Using secondary data from 2000 to 2025, the research applies a Japan-specific Model Diaspora Community (MDC) framework to assess the community’s progress across four pillars: community within, host-society integration, home-country contribution, and transnational reach. Findings indicate notable advancements in community cohesion, marked by rapid population growth and strong associational networks. While host-society integration shows mixed but improving patterns, particularly with increasing permanent residency, persistent municipal-level challenges exist in language and service access. The community’s contribution to Nepal is robust, primarily through remittances, while its transnational connections are strengthened by formal diaspora organizations. The study concludes that the Nepali community is on a credible path toward becoming an MDC, contingent upon addressing municipal service gaps and diversifying economic opportunities beyond the current concentration in the restaurant sector. The paper advocates for “coexistence compacts” to better align recruitment with service capacity and improve pathways to permanent residency. |
