| 内容記述 | Demarcation and articulation condition human intelligence and culture based upon it. Cutting a whole into pieces means assembling and arranging these pieces on the axis of the cutting line(s) as well. The boundary is both an output and a precondition of this mental and physical operation. As is reasonably expected, the boundary comes into being everywhere and every moment in every fashion imaginable: being visible and invisible; between the visible, between the visible and the invisible, and between the invisible. We manipulate this complex network of boundaries of sundry sorts depending on the situations we are in. The manipulation does not start from scratch in our mind but needs articulation and/or an articulation system to be installed within our mind from outside, i.e., through stimuli. Things perceptible and tangible act upon this installation. The exploration of what the boundary is necessitates an examination of the impact the perceptible has upon installing and reproducing it, an examination not (only) in metaphysical but (also) in physical manners. This small paper takes a cursory look at two ancient Greek vases and one Japanese folding screen (屏風 byōbu) and brings into relief how many (sorts of) boundaries run and operate inside the space of pictures and beyond, and, concomitantly, how aspective composition works regardless of the provenances of the artifacts under discussion/dissection. The boundary functions, however, as part of and output of social discourse, which is out of the scope of this paper and is left for the next one. | |||||||||||||
