| 内容記述 | This paper explores the transnational transmission of kindergarten practices between Japan and the United States by focusing on Annie Lyon Howe’s (1852–1943) years in Chicago, where she later became a key figure in promoting Froebelian education in Japan. By tracing Howe’s early career and her relationship with Alice Putnam (1841–1919), a leader of Chicago’s Froebel kindergarten movement, the study clarifies the links between Japanese and Chicago developments. Using Howe’s diaries, letters, notes, and pamphlets from the 1870s to the 1900s, it examines how she learned from and engaged with the Chicago movement. It also draws on newly identified sources on Howe’s interactions with American progressives to shed light on why she advocated a cautious form of Froebelianism in response to progressive educational trends. | |||||||||||||
