| 内容記述 | In 2025, the Department of Science of Living at Kyoritsu Women’s Junior College celebrated its 75th anniversary. This article outlines the department’s development from its founding as the Department of Home Economics in 1950, highlighting major curriculum transitions, course reorganizations, and shifts in educational philosophy. Founded during the postwar reconstruction period to improve family life and train home economics teachers, the department expanded its scientific and professional education as lifestyles modernized and women’s higher education advanced during Japan’s period of rapid economic growth. In 1989, it was renamed the Department of Science of Living, extending its scope from traditional home economics to a broader “science of living” that integrates environment, information, and design. Since the 1990s, the department has continued to reform in response to social change, introducing information education for an emerging information society, adjusting admissions capacity amid a declining birthrate, and reorganizing courses in line with the recent push toward digital transformation（DX）. Its enduring mission has been to cultivate autonomous individuals who can address social issues from the standpoint of everyday life. This article summarizes the department’s history of continual evolution and looks ahead to its future direction. |
