This Story was published in Teikoku Bungaku in January 1906. It is a story about a first lieutenant of the infantry who was killed in the war.\nThe story starts with the phrase “This mad weather would make the gods insane.” The lead character, who relates the tale, presents wars as activities waged by insane gods and designed to give satisfaction to starving dogs, and imagines a scene in which starving dogs bite Japanese and Russian soldiers' flesh and crunch their bones in the battlefield. At one point in the story, he finds himself arriving at his destination, Shinbashi Station, where a crowd of people are waiting for the arrival of a triumphant general from the Manchurian battlefield and his army. The tanned face of the general who has just returned from battle, and the sight of an aged mother throwing herself at her son-a returned sergeant-brings the leading character back to a memory of his friend, who had been on campaign as a first lieutenant of the infantry and had died on November 26 in 1904, during the all-out siege of Lushun Fortress. The leading character goes into the images of the scene of his final battle and death in detail.\nAs noted above, the friend's last battle scene is described by Soseki (in the person of the narrator) in great detail. The first lieutenant, who was called “Koh-san” belonged to The Third Army First Division of the Japanese Army and was present at the charge up 'Songshu Shan' (Pine Tree Hill)-one of the forts behind Port Lushun. However, after jumping into a trench just in front of the enemy fort, he did not emerge. He lay dead in the bottom of the trench, shot with a machine gun.\nThis essay first describes the image of 'war' which is described in the opening sentences of the story, then it turns to the reason Soseki chose to describe the kind of welcome scene that greeted the victorious armies, in November and December 1905.\nIn addition, it is noted that the 'Songshu Shan' assault operated by the First Division in the third all-out siege of Lushun, which is described in this story, was seldom mentioned in histories or stories of the Russo-Japanese War. The reason for the lack of attention was the spectacular, honorable deaths of the members of the 'Shiro-dasuki Tai' (the troop that wears white sashes) and the occupation of the 203-MetreHeights after long and desperate fights.\nFinally, the reason why Soseki intentionally described the losing battle of the Songshu Shan Assault.","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1_description_2":{"attribute_name":"記事種別(日)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論説","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1_description_3":{"attribute_name":"記事種別(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"Articles","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1_source_id_13":{"attribute_name":"雑誌書誌ID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12307731","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_1_text_9":{"attribute_name":"著者所属(日)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"共立女子大学国際学部"}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-04-28"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"kokusai34_6hashikawa.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"2.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"kokusai34_6hashikawa","url":"https://kyoritsu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/3201/files/kokusai34_6hashikawa.pdf"},"version_id":"fa83eb9f-8120-4304-8396-fad5ef449948"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"『趣味の遺伝』 : 夏目漱石が描いた旅順攻囲戦","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"『趣味の遺伝』 : 夏目漱石が描いた旅順攻囲戦","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"“Shumi-no-Iden” : Soseki Natsume's Description of the Siege Warfare of Lushun","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"1","owner":"17","path":["240"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2017-04-28"},"publish_date":"2017-04-28","publish_status":"0","recid":"3201","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["『趣味の遺伝』 : 夏目漱石が描いた旅順攻囲戦"],"weko_creator_id":"17","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-08-31T02:44:07.883646+00:00"}
