| 内容記述 | The Zhao family survived two serious setbacks in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. The first of these was the execution of Zhao Feng-zhao. who was sentenced to death for bribery. He had four surviving sons. and the life story of one of them is known in detail thanks to the existence of a book. describing the family history. It is known from this book that the family regained their honor and prosperity after the hardship that was caused by the execution of Zhao Feng-zhao. The second and much more serious setback for the family was brought about by the Taiping Rebellion. At the fall of the two prefectural cities of Changzhou and Suzhou, there were many casualties. including some members of the Zhao family. Zhao Zhen-zuo. a famous local hero of the time, sacrificed his life at the siege of Changzhou in order to protect the people. His story was commemorated in the official history of the Ch'ing dynasty. In addition. some other members of the Zhao family gained official ranks in return for their military exploits or as a result of the deaths of their fathers while fighting against the rebels. | |||||||||
