Official Life of Zhao Liewen as a Bureaucrat Zhao Liewen began his career as private secretary to Zeng Guofan; he was then appointed by the latter to the post of deputy to the department magistrate of Ci-zhou in Zhili Province (present day Hebei Province). The functions of the magistracy included managing a postal relay station, which ensured Zhao a lucrative salary supplement. Nonetheless, Zhao Liewen was deep in debt at the time of his resignation, because he generously donated almost his entire income toward providing bricks to construct public wells and preventing robberies. While waiting for a new post in Baoding, the central city of Zhili Province, Zhao Liewen was delegated to Zhao-zhou to preside over a criminal case and became a member of the editorial staff compiling the Jifu-tongzhi (The History of Metropolitan Areas). After performing such miscellaneous duties for several months in Baoding, Zhao Liewen set out to Yi-zhou to assume magistracy of the department; this was superior in terms of official rank to that of Ci-zhou, and he eagerly wanted to secure it. However, in Yi-zhou, he ran into some trouble with the keepers of the West Imperial Mausoleum of the Qing dynasty. Because he did not curry favor with the mausoleum keepers, his cooperative relationship with them deteriorated. Having been repeatedly impeached by them, Zhao Liewen finally decided to resign from his post and went home to Changshu in Jiangsu Province. |
