内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 9. Zhaoyuan reminisced
Zhaoyuan (Zhao Garden), a garden built by Zhao Liewen, was remembered by two of his relatives, both very knowledgeable individuals. The first, Deng Bangshu was the son of Zhao Liewen’s wife’s cousin and was also his daughter’s husband. After having lived and studied in Zhaoyuan, Deng Bangshu became a metropolitan graduate. Impressed with Zhao Liewen’s library named Tianfanglou Tower, Deng Bangshu later became a famous book collector. In fact, his immense collection was expensive enough to drive him to extreme poverty. The second relative, Chen Hongzhe, became the first female professor in modern China. Her grandmother was Zhao Liewen’s sister, and her aunt Chen Deyin was married his eldest son. When young Chen Hongzhe spent her dark days in Zhaoyuan, finding no means to gratify her thirst for knowledge because of gender inequality prevailing at that time, Chen Deyin encouraged her to take an examination to study in America. This advice subsequently accorded Chen Hongzhe a successful academic career. Meanwhile, Chen Deyin herself stayed in Zhaoyuan, handling myriad home related problems of the resident families, including her own opium-addicted son and daughter-in-law as well as mistresses and progeny of her deceased brother, Chen Ding, a former member of the Hanlin Academy. Chen Ding was incarcerated because of his involvement in the Hundred Days Reform of Emperor Guangxu and died soon after his release from imprisonment. Zhaoyuan is now open to the public.
