| 内容記述 | This paper attempts to clarify the works and life of HATOYAMA Haruko（1863-1938） and her daughter-in-law, Kaoru（1888-1982）. They had been the president and chief director of Kyoritsu Women’s Educational Institution. Haruko was mother of Hatoyama Ichiro（1883-1959）, who became the Prime Minister in 1954. Haruko was one of the pioneers of home economics, which rose in the Meiji period, and tried to bring up students at Kyoritsu to be “good wives and wise mothers”. Kaoru helped Ichiro’s political activities in spite of his adversity and illness. Haruko and Kaoru published together the Home Economics （Kasei） in 1917, which became one of the best sellers in modern Japan. Haruko wrote 10 chapters on the marrige and family life, and Kaoru wrote 6 chapters on household economy. It was remarkable that Haruko spared 2 chapters for husbands though they rarely read this sort of book then. Haruko warned husbands to keep their chastity and inducted wives into the way to overcome their worry and sorrow caused by misconduct of their husbands. Acutually, her bitter experience influenced this book. Therefore, Kasei became one of the women’s favorite books. Women in modern Japan shared similar problems. | |||||||||||
