| 内容記述 | After the fall of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Zeng-Guofan, the victorious general commander, decided to demobilize his Xiang Army immediately. During the long war with the Taiping forces, the army’s morale declined, and it was infested with a secret society called Gelaohui. The demobilization could save enormous expenses in maintaining the army, but it was an arduous task to make the men go home without revolt, for they had to be paid a huge amount of their outstanding salaries before dismissal. While handling this task, Zeng-Guofan had to suppress the Nien Rebellion. Having demobilized his own army, Zeng-Guofan was forced to command the Huai Army, which was rallied by Li-Hongzhang, his most trusted disciple. It was challenging for Zeng-Guofan to fight the Nien Rebels and he failed to achieve victory. The main reason for the failure was that he was dependent on officers and troops over whom he had never commanded. Li-Hongzhang took over his task, and Zeng-Guofan returned to the post of Liangjiang Governor-general and continued to manage the logistics given by Li-Hongzhang. After being appointed as Zhili Governor-general, Empress Dowager Cixi ordered Zeng-Guofan to discipline the Green Standards to make them strong enough to guard the capital area. His efforts to discipline them ended with the outbreak of the Tianjin Massacre. Li-Hongzhang succeeded to the post of Zhili Governor-general, and his Huai Army bore the defense of the capital area, leading to Li-Hongzhang’s increasing military and political power. | |||||||||||
