内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper explores the trends and characteristics of Japanese firms’ expansion throughout overseas in the 2010s. We analyze Kaigai Sinshutsu Kigyo Soran data(Toyo Keizai Inc.) which provides the number of overseas subsidiaries and their composition by industries and regions, as well as Bank of Japan’s foreign direct investment data, which aggregates the amount of foreign direct investment.
First, our findings show that the number of Japanese overseas subsidiaries was rapidly increasing in the period of Japanese yen appreciation after the Great East Japan Earthquake, but the increase has slowed down since 2015. Particularly, we observe that the non-manufacturing firms were active in overseas expansion during this period. Secondly, Japanese overseas subsidiaries overconcentrated in Asia, North America, and Europe, and this trend remained throughout during the 2010s. Moreover, Japanese overseas subsidiaries were in industries of diverse categories, implying that various industries were involved in foreign direct investment for different motivations, but the composition of the number of foreign subsidiaries by industries was unchanged. Lastly, the purpose of investment abroad varied between industries and, in particular, between manufacturing and non-manufacturing. While the manufacturing firms tended to invest for production, non-manufacturing firms sought efficiency in distribution and information gathering.
